On 31 May, 1 and 2 June, Semyon Bychkov conducted his last Tchaikovsky Symphony for this season with the San Francisco Symphony. The San Francisco Chronicle reported: “The Tchaikovsky, subtitled “Little Russian,” came as a welcome restorative after intermission, in a performance that did justice to the composer’s graceful spirit and ingenious use of folk tunes.”

“The electrifying account led by Semyon Bychkov as the central work of Thursday’s concert was even finer, making the strongest possible case for an extravagant, hourlong score that belongs right up there in the canon of Tchaikovsky orchestral masterpieces that includes the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth symphonies.” said the Chicago Tribune of Maestro Bychkov’s performances of the Manfred Symphony last week with the Chicago Symphony.

Following performances of Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony in Prague last week with the Czech Philharmonic, Semyon Bychkov is currently midst recording the work with the Orchestra as part of his ongoing Tchaikovsky Project. As Harmonie Online said of the concerts at the Rudolfinum, “The degree of commitment of all of the players to Bychkov, his refinement of details, the unfolding of the ingenious score, and the manner of interpretation was extraordinary… Under Semyon Bychkov’s leadership, the Tchaikovsky Project on the Decca label could leave a timeless mark on the history of classical music recordings.”

Three concerts at the Rudolfinum in Prague this week with the Czech Philharmonic will be followed by recording sessions from 11-14 December of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. The recording will eventually be released in 2019 as part of the boxset of the Tchaikovsky Project from Decca Classics.
